Fried plantains and spring rolls were served alongside Skyline chili and cheesecake at this year’s International Student Union International Dinner.

This past Friday, 23 student organizations came together with the International Student Union to serve traditional food to Athens residents and Ohio University students and faculty.

Hundreds of guests eagerly awaited food in the Baker Ballroom as OU President Roderick McDavis made the opening speech for the international dinner.

“As we look across the room this evening, the world is present,” McDavis said.

Because the dinner was in the new student center, ISU was able to accommodate more people than last year, said Eason Yang, ISU communication director. Last year’s attendance was 250 people. This year all 400 tickets were sold.

For the first time, ISU had to follow the OU catering policy, said ISU vice president Jee Hsing. In past years, dishes could be prepared in student homes, but this year a kitchen space had to be reserved and the menus pre-approved. All of the food was cooked the day of the event in Jefferson Hall, said Kiko Tanaka, secretary of ISU.

The change resulted in the food being delivered late to the ballroom. However, most of the guests didn’t seem to mind the delay.

“It took a little time to get going, but the food was good,” said Wendy Fontaine, an Athens resident and OU alum.

Overall many of the participants said the dinner was about far more than food.

Events like the international dinner bring cultural diversity to Athens. It helps the community think globally instead of just locally, said ISU President Reuben Dlamini.
